Western Carolina Livestock Market

It's fate is sealed.  What is yet to come with the construction of the New Belgium Brewery will surely be an improvement.  I can't help but be a bit recalcitrant about the imminent demolition of the Western Carolina Livestock Market.  I felt cheated about getting shut out on a chance to take photos inside of it while it was still in action.

So I asked Zen Sutherland to come around with me one evening this week to take pictures knowing it might be my last shot at this place.   I was not disappointed!  What an amazing warren of corrals, pens, cobwebs and poop.  The photos turned out in an almost natural sepia tone just because of all the dust in the air.  I can't help but think about archive photos I've seen of the yard when it was a thriving hub of activity. Of course we did get stopped by security as we were finishing up and warned to leave or face arrest.  [Sigh.]  It was worth it! There is word that New Belgium is hoping to have most of the buildings' wood and metal materials will be harvested for re-use *but no details yet about how that will be decided and divvied out.

There will be a fence up around the whole place soon and then the bull pens will be traded for bull dozers, brown fields for greenways.

* An update there will apparently be a re-use party in the works. Referenced here: Salvaging Materials From Stockyard

  1. I had a grand time with you, Cindy! The dust there really was a factor and i'm glad we didn't need to change lenses for that reason. You got me wondering what they're going to do with all that fine rough-hewn wood too - hoping they let the artists at it!

I'll go a-photo-in' with you anyday. Your gift of schmoozing over the security guard was doubly appreciated! :)
